Belgravia was built to a strict order of house sizes around its garden squares. The houses are tall, regular and mostly white. Their lower ground floors are the natural place for a gym. Mews houses behind them are a harder case.

Westminster allows one storey below the lowest original floor. The Belgravia plan prefers new space added upwards. It discourages basements in mews. So we first ask if the gym can use the floor already there.

The plan notes a high water table in parts. A gym slab must resist water pushing up from below. We design the waterproofing and the pumped drainage before the layout. Floor loads are then checked against the raft.
