Pimlico terraces often have vaults under the pavement. They are cool, enclosed and close to the lower ground floor. Joined to it, they can hold a small gym and its storage.

Westminster allows a vault to reach 1.8 metres below the highway. At least 900mm must stay above it. Lowering the lower ground floor can add the height a rack needs.

Most owners here hold one flat. So the freeholder’s consent comes first. Underpinning shared walls brings party wall notices. Planning has been needed for basement work citywide since July 2016.
