Fulham’s Victorian terraces are narrow and deep. Many hide a coal cellar under the front hall. Nobody can swing a kettlebell in it. The task is to find the extra height.
Lowering the cellar floor gains the height a squat rack needs. Widening it adds room for a rower and a stretching mat. Anything under the lawn is capped by the plan. The street front must look as before.
Treadmills hum through shared brick. We stand the gym floor and ceiling apart from the neighbour’s wall. Rising water is a real risk near the river. A sump and pump sit behind a service panel.

- Policy DC11 gives one storey. Lowering a low cellar is how a gym gets its height.
- Garden
- Soil of at least one metre sits above any gym under the lawn.
- Lightwells
- A front lightwell for the gym must be discreet. The terrace should look unchanged.
- Flood risk
- Most of the borough is in flood zones 2 and 3. A flood risk assessment is required.
