Notting Hill houses are tall and narrow. A cinema there is a snug. It is planned around a tight hall and a shared garden.

A snug, not a hall

NU Projects is a design and build company in Fulham SW6, founded in 2010. We handle basement cinema rooms in Notting Hill W11, under one contract. A basement runs £450 to £780 a sq ft, construction only. Call 020 7731 6841, and a budget estimate typically follows within seven days.

Notting Hill is stuccoed terraces round communal gardens. Plots are narrow and the houses are tall. The cellar is often small. So a cinema here is a snug, not a hall.

Under Policy CD11, a storey is about three to four metres, floor to ceiling. The cinema must sit inside that height. Many houses are listed, and none can be dug beneath. The garden limit is half, left as one area.

Access decides the build. Materials arrive by hand through a narrow hall, past a shared garden. So boards, steel frames and equipment are sized to travel. We plan the delivery route before we order anything.

In Chelsea we fitted a panelled media room in a terraced house. It has a fitted screen. A townhouse of ours there holds a cinema room with copper shelving. One team designs, prices and builds the room.

Is a Notting Hill terrace too narrow for a basement cinema?

Rarely. A narrow plot suits a snug with a handful of seats.

The screen wall is the main design decision.

How do materials reach a Notting Hill cinema room site?

By hand, through the hall, in pieces sized to fit.

We agree the route before the work starts.

What does a Notting Hill basement home cinema cost?

Our basement band is £450 to £780 a sq ft, construction only.

Tight access can add time and labour.

Can a listed Notting Hill house have a lower floor cinema?

Not by digging under it, nor under its vaults.

An existing lower room may be fitted out, with consent.

Will a Notting Hill cinema room disturb the communal garden?

The sound is held inside its own shell, so very little escapes.

Site work is planned to protect the shared space.
