Belgravia ground can be wet, and a cinema is full of electronics. We design for the worst day, not the average one.
A Belgravia cinema, built dry.
- Wet ground noted
- The neighbourhood plan records a high water table.
- Listed order kept
- Original room layouts must not be unbalanced.
- One team
- NU designs, prices and builds.
NU Projects is a design and build company in Fulham SW6, founded in 2010. We handle basement cinema rooms in Belgravia SW1, under one contract. A basement runs £450 to £780 a sq ft, construction only. Call 020 7731 6841, and a budget estimate typically follows within seven days.
Belgravia is cream stucco terraces, built tall on a regular plan. The lower floors are deep, with vaulted passages under the pavement. A cinema can take the old service floor. That works if the structure allows.
The Belgravia Neighbourhood Plan favours upward additions and discourages basements in mews. Westminster allows one storey below the lowest original floor. Listed houses must keep their original order of rooms. So a cinema here is often a refit of an existing lower floor.
The ground is wet in parts, and basements flooded in July 2021. Water must never reach the equipment. We drain the cavity, add pumps and raise the electronics off the floor. Sound treatment goes on only after the walls are dry.
We built a basement gym under a Chelsea townhouse. In a Chelsea terraced house we fitted a green panelled media room. One team designs, prices and builds the dry structure and the room.

Further reading, from the journal
Can a Belgravia house with vaults have a cinema room?
Often yes, using an existing lower floor rather than a new dig.
The vaults and structure are surveyed first.
How do you protect a Belgravia basement cinema from flooding?
We drain the wall cavity, fit pumps and lift the electronics clear.
The design assumes water will come.
What does a Belgravia home cinema cost to build?
Our basement band is £450 to £780 a sq ft, construction only.
A listed house often needs more design and monitoring.
Is a Belgravia mews house suited to a cinema?
The neighbourhood plan discourages new basements in mews.
A refit of an existing lower room is the likelier route.
How does a Belgravia cinema fit a listed townhouse?
The room must not unbalance the original order of rooms.
So it is placed where the house can take it.
