Our Marylebone apartment is on the first floor of a Grade II listed building. We renovated it and designed the interior.

The period fabric was kept. Ornate plasterwork, marble chimneypieces, panelling and shuttered sashes all stayed.

We added a spiral staircase up to a mezzanine wardrobe area. Cochrane Bespoke made the new wardrobes.

Listed rooms set the rules for joinery. Fixings avoid the plaster, and nothing crosses a cornice.

Can new wardrobes go into a listed Marylebone apartment?

Yes. Ours sit on a mezzanine reached by a spiral stair.

They were fixed so the period fabric stayed intact.

Do Marylebone estates need to approve joinery work?

Often, where they hold the freehold.

Their licence usually sits beside the council’s consent.

Plasterwork, chimneypieces, panelling and shutters are part of the listing.

We draw new pieces to stand clear of them.
