Belgravia is cream stucco terraces in long, regular runs around garden squares. Behind each front is a tall, formal stack of rooms. A grand stair rises through the middle. Decoration here is judged by how well it carries that scale.

Belgravia is a conservation area, judged against the whole terrace. Much of the stock is Grade II listed, so consent covers plasterwork and stairs. Much of it is Grosvenor estate land. A leaseholder usually needs its licence too.

Polished plaster, such as Venetian or marmorino, suits a stair hall. It is laid in thin skins and burnished to a soft glow. It belongs on new or sound walls. Historic plaster in a listed room is another matter.

Next door in Knightsbridge, we finished a marble entrance hall with a curving stair. Another reception there is panelled in bronze. One team plans, protects, prices and finishes it.

Can polished plaster be applied in a Belgravia stair hall?

Yes, on sound or new walls.

Over historic plaster in a listed room, we advise against it.

Usually, for anything beyond simple redecoration.

We read the lease and ask the estate early.

Is repainting a Belgravia front controlled?

Changes seen from the street are judged against the whole terrace.

We ask the council before any colour is chosen.

Does decorating a Grade II listed Belgravia house need consent?

Like for like redecoration usually does not.

Replacing plaster, cornices or panelling can, so we ask first.

How is a Belgravia house kept clean during decoration?

Rooms are sealed and floors covered.

The stair and the hall are protected for the full run.
