Seven months into a full refurbishment of a Chelsea house, this is where the work had reached.
The scope grew after the opening-up survey. What began as a refurbishment of the principal rooms became a whole-house job once the floor levels were measured.
Every floor and ceiling in the house was levelled. On a period house that is rarely optional. Floors that run out by twenty millimetres across a room show up in every skirting, every door and every run of joinery, and no amount of finishing hides it.
New handrails were made and fitted, with iron spindles matched to the age of the staircase. The whole property was rewired, which also gave us the containment for the lighting control and data we would need later. Wet underfloor heating went in across the ground floor.
The plastering followed, which is the point at which a house stops looking like a site. Flat, true walls are what every later finish is measured against.
