Ronnie Surridge. If you are in the BMX world you will know the name. He was sponsored by big names back in the day. They included Vans, Alpine Stars, Profile Racing, Staffbmx, Team Blowin It and Protec. It is easy to see he was well respected in the BMX sphere.
He started off as a youngster with his twin brother. His first bike was a Harlo Sport bike. What started as riding outdoors with his brother turned into a career. When he finished school, there were many options for his path. Graphic design was one of them.
But then he was given the chance to go to America. That country was revelling in the investment into the BMX sport. It was not providing the talent that was being showcased in the UK. Ronnie leapt at the opportunity. He grabbed himself championships and sponsorship early on. He was younger than his competitors. Ronnie’s ranking rose drastically in popularity and championships.
He saw some individuals as his heroes. He soon found himself lined up next to them on the ramp. He competed alongside them and then became long term friends. Bestwick, Hoffman and Mirra are well established names in the BMX World. His closest friend and fellow BMX competitor is Scotty Cranmer. BMX was a passion for Ronnie. With passion comes determination, hard work and success.
Now older and back in London, Ronnie has found a new passion. It is residential construction. Being a past athlete works in so many favours when entering a new career. The athlete’s mentality is very beneficial when it comes to any career. It brings a hard work ethic. It brings the determination to carry on through the highs and lows. It also helps you persist until you reach your goals.
Ronnie and Nick, founder here at NU Projects, have been long term friends. They met through their connection with BMX in England. Their passion for their sport was also mirrored in both their passions for construction. Ronnie had worked on side return extensions, renovations and loft conversions. He also project managed a run of residential projects in east London. In 2019 he joined NU Projects as head project manager. He is also sales representative for NU Kitchens.
He liked the same thing about construction as about the sport: the process. You start small and you build it up. At the end you can see what you have made. Looking at a property and seeing its potential is a form of creativity. The aim may be value or a house somebody wants to live in.
