My year at NU Projects

I thought I would do a blog post a little differently. I have now been in the NU team for 14 months. I thought I would write about my experience at the Fulham office. Nick took me on as an individual who was passionate about interior design. I only held a couple of months of office administrative skills. But I wanted to learn about the construction aspect of residential property. I also wanted to learn about property development. I work part time alongside my interior studies. I have been able to learn an incredible amount on the job. I have also learnt the other aspects that come into the role. One is the business aspect.

In my first couple of months I moved from heading the company’s marketing. I became PA to Nick. The marketing included the website update and brochure creation. It also included social media platform postings and blog creations. I already took on those roles. My position then became more diverse. I met clients on site and was their first point of contact. I also wrote up the estimates. I contacted architects and surveyors for potential collaboration opportunities. My year has been incredibly diverse. I have been able to learn a vast amount about the industry. That includes what is involved in construction, architecture and surveying. It includes all the other roles that come into play in construction.

I have worked closely with Nick and the team. I feel very fortunate to have learnt so many useful insights in the industry. I have also worked closely with contractors, suppliers and industry-based people. It has really opened my eyes. With property there are multiple people and organisations that need to be involved. I have gained insights and tips from industry experts. They range from trade to project managers to corporate businesses.

Interior design is the line of work I want to go into. I am now a graduate of KLC School of Design. Working at NU Projects at the same time taught me a great deal. Interior design requires construction. Construction requires interior design. That is true at the end of a signed off property. It is also true at the beginning with spatial planning. Linking the two has been incredibly valuable for me.

Nick allowed me to join the team. I had only previously had a few months office experience. I had never been involved in residential construction. The experience he has provided me with has been invaluable. I was allowed to take control of many tasks and make decisions. I also worked in an energetic, fast paced team. It has been fun and varied.

I am going to miss the team and the office and site-life. I have been part of them for the last 14 months. But I know they will always be there. I can pop in for a cup of tea, a special cup of tea!
