A Fulham kitchen extension and ground floor remodelling

A kitchen extension and a complete reworking of the ground floor of a Fulham house. This is what the project involved.

The design

The brief started with how the family used the back of the house, not with a floor area. Our designers worked through the layout with the client over several rounds before anything was fixed, because the extension was only half the job. The rest was the plan of the existing ground floor, which had to change with it.

The build

The house stayed occupied, so the sequence was built around that: protection, dust control, working hours and daily clearing up. The client was told at the start of each week what would happen in it, and the programme and the cost were reported against the plan rather than described.

The specification

Materials were chosen to last rather than to photograph. On a ground floor that takes daily traffic, that decision shows up about three years in, which is long after the photographs are taken.

What one contract changed

Architecture, interior design, project management and construction all sat with NU. When the opening-up found something nobody had drawn, the same team priced it, agreed it and built it, which is the difference between a variation and an argument.
