A Fulham house renovation with a zinc clad extension

A conventional Fulham house, renovated throughout, with a new kitchen extension clad in zinc. This is what the work involved.

The kitchen extension

The extension was the core of the project, and it was designed around how the family actually uses the back of the house rather than around a floor area.

Zinc was chosen for the cladding deliberately. It reads as contemporary against a brick terrace, and it weathers rather than degrades, so the extension will still look intentional in fifteen years. The design team worked the glazing and the roof lights around where the light falls through the day, which is what connects the room to the garden rather than just opening onto it.

The rest of the house

Beyond the extension, the project covered a complete renovation. Every room was taken back and rebuilt, with the layout reworked so that the practical functions have a proper place rather than being hidden behind the visual design.

The living spaces were opened up to make the most of the daylight. The colour palette was chosen to keep the rooms warm rather than cool. Materials and finishes were specified to a standard that suits the rest of the street.

What made it work

Architecture, interior design, project management and construction all sat under one contract, so the drawing and the build never diverged. When the opening-up found something nobody had drawn, the same team priced it, approved it and built it.
